AMA SX: Canard wins and Stewart loses ground

3-21-2011

by Luc Fradette

American Honda’s Trey Canard registered his second career victory in the 11th race of the AMA Supercross season presented at Jacksonville’s EverBank Field.

It was KTM Red Bull Racing’s Mike Alessi who took the holeshot at the start of the 20-lap main event in the Class 450 just while series runner-up San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart collided with another rider and was unable to finish the race.

Soon enough, Canard took over the lead followed closely by Alessi and Chad Reed (Honda). Then,Reed passed Alessi for second place. Through lap two, Canard lengthened his lead with Reed and current champion Ryan Dungey (Suzuki) in pursuit.

The remaining 18 laps Reed narrowed in on Canard’s lead, and eventually made a pass on lap 18. Canard quickly answered back and moved into the lead. The win marked Canard’s second of the season. Reed finished second and Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey finished third.

With his crash, Stewart was the rider who lost the most, dropping all the way from second to fourth in the standings while Chad Reed is now closing in the top spot, only
7 points adrift Ryan Villopoto.

The AMA Supercross is moving to Canada with the next event presented in Toronto next Saturday March 26th.
