Detroit 2008: Hyundai shows off its Genesis premium sedan (video)

Hyundai's upcoming full-sized sedan features rear-wheel drive and the world's latest cutting-edge technologies employed for safety, luxury and performance. From a mere glance, it's apparent that the designers at Hyundai have put in some overtime on this one. Aimed at Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, the Genesis features a body adorned by some striking stylistic elements visible in the photos--but it's what's under the hood that's most impressive.

The company's first V8 engine, simply called Tau, is a 4.6-liter unit that produces 368 horsepower and 324 lb-ft on regular unleaded. With premium fuel, the output climbs slightly to 375 hp and 333 lb-ft. There are also two other engine choices for the Genesis: a 264-hp 3.3-liter V6 as well as a 290-hp 3.8-liter V6. All models come with a 6-speed automatic with manual mode.

Advanced technologies and features abound inside the Genesis, including heated and cooled seats, push-button start and self-levelling xenon headlights. On the safety front, Genesis boasts a rearward-facing backup-camera to avoid reversing accidents, as well as adaptive cruise control which can automatically detect and maintain a pre-set distance from another car in traffic.

It is said to offer the interior space of a BMW 7-Series and the performance of a 5-Series at the price of a 3-Series. The stereo system is a Lexicon. Lexicon only supplies one other company, Rolls Royce.
