DTM: Title to be decided in the last round in Shanghai

11-21-2010

by Emmanuel Rolland

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes Classe C) will contest a crucial last DTM round next week-end in Shanghai. Will his three points advantage be enough for him to secure the 2010 title ?

For the first time, a Canadian may clinch the DTM championship. Bruno Spengler, who lost the championship lead in Hockenheim – suspension failure while Di Resta won -, took the championship lead back in Adria, when Di Resta failed to score points.

The Canadian driver is now three points ahead of the Scot, and nine points ahead of Gary Paffett. A second place would be enough for Spengler to secure the title, even if Di Resta’s wins. The Audis, who were back to victory with Timo Scheider in Adria, may also be victory contenders in Shanghai.

“I’m looking forward to race in Shanghai, Spengler told auto123.com. It will be new for everybody, and it will also be my first race “overseas” with the DTM series.

“As far as the track is concerned, it’s very difficult to know what to expect, but we can be sure that, as a street circuit, it is likely to be quite dirty at the beginning of the meeting. We expect a lot of differences between the first practices on Friday, and the qualifying. It will be important to find the right set up very quickly.

“I will approach this race like the any other one. Obviously, it’s the final round, and the title will be decided in Shanghai, but I won’t change my way to work. I will give it my best, and I will target maximum points after the 60 laps. Then, we will count the points for the last time of the season and see.”
