F1: Ferrari sets the pace in Barcelona

3-10-2009

by René Fagnan , Auto123.com

Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari set the fastest time the second day of testing at the Barcelona circuit in preparation for the opening round of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship.

Kimi Raikkonen's planned program consisted of a comparison of various set-up options at the start of the day, followed by Grand Prix weekend simulation (qualifying and race.) Unfortunately, the simulation came to a premature end, because of a problem with the KERS cooling system.

Race simulation for Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari.

Raikkonen nevertheless posted a best time of 1:20.314 to finish over half a second in front of his closest rival, Kazuki Nakajima driving the Toyota-powered Williams.

Rubens Barichello took over the driving duties of the Mercedes-powered Brawn BGP001. The Brazilian set the 3rd fastest time and proved the mechanical reliability of the new car, completing 111 laps of the Spanish track.

Jarno Trulli had another solid day for Toyota, completing 121 laps on his way to the fourth quickest time of the day, ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber (suffering from electrical gremlins) and BMW's Sauber Nick Heidfeld (who ran a GP simulation).

McLaren had another disappointing day. Heikki Kovalainen was 9th, a massive 1.677 second slower than the Ferrari of Raikkonen...

Sébastien Bourdais managed just 14 laps for Toro Rosso team before the STR4 suffered a problem with the front suspension. Teammate Sebastien Buemi took over in the afternoon, but the Swiss completed only six laps before the test was stopped because repairs needed the arrival of new parts from the factory back in Faenza.
