F1: Best new teams in Formula 1 history

The Brawn GP team, née Honda and BAR, made the headline news on Sunday in Brazil by claiming the Constructors World Championship in its first season in Formula 1.

What other teams performed extremely well during their first year in Formula 1?

Tyrrell-Ford 003

TYRRELL – 1st place in 1971

Ken Tyrrell’s team made the switch from a March 701 chassis to its own Tyrrell 001 with just three races to run in the 1970 season. The 001 was used early during the1971 season until the 003 replaced it. The Tyrrell team clinched the constructors’ title that year, and Jackie Stewart captured the drivers’ championship.

MARCH – 3rd place in 1970
The British March team captured 3rd place in the 1970 constructors’ standings, with their best place driver, Jackie Stewart taking 5th in the standings.

Wolf-Ford WR1


WOLF – 4th place in 1977

Owned by Canadian Walter Wolf, the Wolf team captured 4th place in the 1977 constructors’ championship. Wolf only ran one driver, Jody Scheckter who ranked second to Niki Lauda in the final standings.

LOLA – 4th place in 1962
Eric Broadley’s Lola finished the 1962 season in 4th place in the standings. Its best driver was John Surtees who also finished 4th in the drivers’ championship,

Ligier-Matra JS5

LIGIER – 5th place in 1976

Guy Ligier’s Formula 1 team ran Jacques Laffite in 1976. The V-12 Matra-powered car JS5 took Laffite to 7th place in the drivers’ standings while the Ligier team ranked 5th on the constructors’ table.
