Ryan Briscoe beat points leader Scott Dixon to pole position for the championship finale at Chicagoland.

Rival Helio Castroneves has been put to the back of the grid for crossing the white line at the edge of the track during his qualifying lap.

Ganassi driver Dixon, who had dominated practice, held provisional pole for most of the session, resisting strong challenges from the Andretti Green cars in particular.

Alexandre Tagliani, due partly to Castroneves penalty, will start from the 19th spot.
