Lauda set for Champ Car switch

Mathias Lauda could switch to racing in the USA this season, turning his back on a second season in Europe with either GP2 or Formula Superfund.

Lauda, son of former F1 World Champion Niki Lauda, raced in both International F3000 and Euro3000 in 2004, often flying between circuits to compete in both series on the same weekend.

However reports today suggest the Austrian is looking for a drive in the US Champ Car series, with title-winning team Forsythe Racing.

"It is easier to find a budget of three million dollars for Champ Cars than 1.2 million for a series such as the GP2, where no one knows how it will evolve," said Lukas Lauda, brother of Mathias.

"More so, if you are performing nicely in Champ Cars as a rookie, as seventh or so, you are the hero. If you finish third or fourth in GP2, no one will give a toss."

If successful he would join F3000 alumni including Justin Wilson, Bruno Junqueira and Sebastien Bourdais.
