Inside, a
completely new interior features a ''sport-oriented instrument panel, a
multi-function steering wheel, rich materials and improved spaciousness for all
five seating positions.''
By comparison,
there are over 50 mm of additional front leg room, as well as more rear-passenger
knee and leg room.
A lot of work
has gone into making the ML's interior much better, since that is the current
model's primary weakness. So, according to Mercedes in
Germany, the
new ML has ''higher-quality materials, more pleasant touch and feel
characteristics, and significantly improved spaciousness for all the vehicle's
passengers.''
The cushions and
backrests of the rear seats in the 2006 ML are split 63:37 and can be folded
down. Removable cushions can be ordered as an option, creating a level loading
surface of 2,100 mm through the rear of the car. Maximum load capacity stands
at 2050 litres, exceeding that offered by its predecessor by 30 litres.
State-of-the-art
assistance systems ''more familiar from luxury-class Mercedes models help to
relieve the stress on the driver, raise comfort and further improve safety,''
says the German office. The
New
Jersey office is not yet willing or able to say which
will be available as standard or optional equipment.
The 2006 ML will
mark the debut of a new active head restraint system that should provide
increased protection against neck injuries in the event of a rear
collision.
The new ML also
includes adaptive two-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger, curtain
side airbags and belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seating
positions.
Prices have not
yet been revealed, but the current ML350 costs about $52,000 and the current
ML500 retails for about $67,500.
