NASCAR: Jeremy Mayfield given the go ahead by court

7-2-2009

by Luc Fradette

Jeremy Mayfield, who had been suspended by NASCAR governing body after allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine, has been allowed to return behind the wheel after getting his suspension lifted by a US court.

Mayfield had been allegedly tested positive for illicit drug use in a random test conducted at Richmond last May and he was suspended from any on-track activities.

Mayfield has denied taking methamphetamine, while saying since the very beginning that a combination of prescribed medicine and over-the-counter drugs resulted in a false positive result in the test.

On Wednesday he got a temporary injunction from a court in Charlotte that enables him to race again, starting with this week-end Daytona race, as the Judge said that the financial harm to done to Mayfield by preventing him from racing, substantially outweighs the potential harm to NASCAR.

NASCAR officials stood by their arguments while respecting the court ruling. However, they plan to continue to fight Mayfield's case in the courts.
