NASCAR: Joey Logano wins his first race of the year

4-12-2009

by Éric Descarries

Though there were no Sprint Cup race on the schedule this weekend, young driver Joey Logano (Camry No 20) took advantage of the situation to finally win his first race of the year, the second of his NASCAR career, the Nationwide Pepsi 300 run at the 1.3-mile Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday afternoon.

Point leader Carl Edwards (Ford No 60) had got the pole, but the race soon became a duel between Logano and his teammate Kyle Busch (Camry No 18).

In a relatively safe race with only 4 caution flags, Logano took the lead from Busch with only nine (9) laps to go and crossed the checkered flag ahead of everyone for the first time this year.

Following Logano and Busch were Brad Keslowski (Chevy No 88), Kelly Bires (Chevy No 33) and Carl Edwards (Ford No 60).

There were only six lead changes during the race in which Logano held an average speed of some 144 mph (232 kph).

Edwards still leads the Nationwide championship with only 956 points, 23 more than Kyle Busch and 160 more than his teammate David Ragan (Ford No 6).

The Nationwide series will be back in action next Friday evening at the Phoenix International Raceway.
