The fire-breathing 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP debuts in New York

As if 361 horsepower wasn't enough, the G8 will get an even hotter version with the intro of the GXP variant.

The rear-drive G8's engine bay will be stuffed with a 6.2-liter V8 that generates 402 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, and which will be mated to a standard-issue 6-speed automatic or an optional Tremec 6-speed manual. The car also gets a limited-slip differential to handle all that muscle.

The G8 GXP also gets an adjustable performance suspension, a quicker steering rate and Brembo brakes. 19-inch polished alloy wheels are standard, and are fitted with P245/40R19 tires.

Styling enhancements for the GXP include a unique front end and a rear bumper diffuser. The cockpit gets satin and chrome trim as well as other sport appearance highlights. The seats receive two-tone leather surfacing and color-coordinated GXP embroidery.

According to GM, key competitors are the Dodge Charger SRT8 and, um, the Nissan Maxima.
