Subaru has announced that it will allow owners to experience the beauty of all wheel drive while minimizing their environmental footprint this spring. The Japanese automaker will add Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) designated Outback and Legacy models to their lineup this spring. The pair were first unveiled at the Montreal Auto Show.

The green-enhanced models meet very strict California standards, and Subaru claims 90 percent cleaner emissions than the average new car. Both new models are also SmartWay certified by the EPA and recognized in a list of the greenest vehicles available to consumers.


PZEV one-ups the Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) designation by eliminating evaporative fuel emissions. By achieving a very clean fuel-burn, PZEV vehicles can be even cleaner than hybrids. In fact, in some instances they emit exhaust gases that are cleaner than the air surrounding the vehicle.

Both Legacy and Outback PZEV run modified versions of Subaru's 2.5 litre boxer engine with 170 horsepower and 170 lb.- ft of torque. The engine requires regular fuel.
