Volkswagen Tiguan HyMotion Concept

6-29-2008

by Auto123.com

To bolster its position as a green automaker, Volkswagen developed a fuel-cell variant of its all-new Tiguan compact SUV.

The Tiguan HyMotion Concept runs solely on hydrogen. It produces no tailpipe emissions, as clean water vapor is the only byproduct of fuel cell vehicles. Volkswagen debuted the vehicle at the last Bidendum Challenge in Shanghai -- an international competition aiming to promote sustainable automotive development.

Inside the Tiguan HyMotion's engine bay is a 134-hp electric motor assisted by lithium-ion batteries. The latter can be recharged while on the move either by regenerative braking or the fuel cell itself.

In terms of performance, the vehicle sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 14 seconds and reaches a top speed of 150 km/h.

Inside, no compromises were made to accommodate the batteries; rather, they are mounted underneath the cargo floor. As for the hydrogen reservoir, you'll find it under the rear bench seat -- another space-saving configuration.

For now, the Tiguan HyMotion is nothing more than a concept. No official announcement has been made with regard to Volkswagen's future plans.
