2008.5 MAZDASPEED3 Review

8-7-2008

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

Twisty roads wanted
There's nothing the MSP3 likes better than being tossed around at a fairly high velocity. The car gets upgraded steering, suspension and brakes, and the driver feels confident by its composure and stability. Braking power is particularly good, with short stopping distances and well-balanced deceleration.

The driver feels confident by the composure and stability of the MAZDASPEED3.

On the other hand, the ride is pretty stiff for everyday driving, and this is where the GTI seems to have the upper hand compared to the Mazda. VW's engineers have struck the perfect balance between a sporty suspension calibration and a supple ride, while the MSP3 pounds its occupants most of the time. But if that's what you like, fine, but thirtysomethings like me might find it tiresome.

Undistinguished, inside and out
The visual differences between a Mazda3 Sport GT and the MSP3 are subtle. The latter gets 18-inch wheels, a larger rear spoiler, slightly restyled front and rear bumpers, and that's about it. That's good or bad; you'll be spending much more for this car and might want a little more distinction. On the other hand, it's less prone to attract stares from the local police.

Inside, you'll find sport seats that are very comfortable despite minimal adjustment possibilities as well as metallic pedals, but the rest feels and looks standard-issue Mazda3. For a souped-up family car, there is a fair amount of cargo space, but this is no station wagon. Rear-seat access and legroom is also limited.

Competition
The 2008.5 MAZDASPEED3 costs $31,360, and there are no options besides an extra charge for mica ($105) and pearl ($200) paint. For those who are wondering why there's a 2008.5 model, it's because the Mazda3 lineup got a round of mid-year improvements. The seats lose their two-tone color scheme (now black on black), the sound system now reads MP3 files (finally) and includes SIRIUS satellite radio, and bright finish wheels.
