Alton, Ontario -- Barely two years after the launch of the fifth-generation Sonata, Hyundai is updating its midsize sedan. Executives of the Korean automaker hope to take advantage of a relative lull in this market segment following the redesign of some key players.
"With a more refined Sonata, we're confident to attract an even larger number of customers," says John Vernile, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Hyundai Auto Canada.
You see, the Sonata, which sells a little over 11,000 units a year in Canada, still battles in the middle of the pack, in a segment that includes more than 20 different models led by the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The 2009 Hyundai Sonata boasts more technical upgrades than cosmetic changes. |
Subtle cosmetic changesOne thing's for sure: you have to pay extra attention to distinguish the 2009 Sonata from the 2008 model. Aside from the revised front fascia with more prominent headlights and the new fully red taillight lenses, the exterior remains the same.
Fortunately, the new-for-2009 GL Sport model is easier to recognize thanks to a subtle spoiler on the trunklid and exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels.
According to Mr. Vernile, this model could definitely improve the Sonata's image: "Midsize sedan buyers are wondering why they have to sacrifice a bit of driving excitement when opting for this type of car. Therefore, we made sure to add some spice to our Sonata -- enough to make it truly distinctive and more attractive than ever."
Cleverly redefined lineup |

The Sonata GL Sport fulfills this mission. Beyond its tastefully dynamic styling, this car boasts a firmer suspension than other 2009 Sonatas. Inside, it receives a semi-leather, semi-cloth treatment. Elsewhere, the tailpipes have been modified to deliver a sportier exhaust note. The only thing missing would be more supportive seats.
But the GL Sport is only one of seven different models that make up the 2009 Sonata lineup. Gone is the GLS trim. From now on, buyers can choose between GL, GL Automatic, GL Sport, GL V6, GL V6 Sport, Limited and
Limited V6 models.
Every Sonata comes with a more precise steering and improved suspension systems with firmer settings (but softer than the new Sport model, as mentioned) and a larger front stabilizer bar. The biggest news, though, is the power and operational refinement upgrades, not to mention greater fuel economy.
