2001-2005 Pontiac Aztek Pre-Owned

11-25-2007

Like any used vehicle, you'll want to be aware of popular problems ahead of time- though you may be relieved to know that for the most part, Aztek was a reliable machine. No major failures or issues were discovered, though electrical problems were the most notable.

Wiring issues were the most commonly discovered problem. Loose connectors were an issue, and reports exist of a dead fuel gauge caused by a water leak onto an electrical component. Especially notable on 2002 models, this problem could leave you stranded on the side of the road, as it can result in a no-start situation.

Additionally, some owners report periodic non-operation of the instrument cluster while the rest of the vehicle functions normally. The result is most often a burned fuse caused by a short circuit, and similar issues can arise with CD player or power windows.

A faulty electronic module may also be responsible for non-operation of the rear liftgate on some models, though repair costs are low and some owners report being able to fix the problem by simply disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

Ever spill your coffee all over the centre console of your car? Usually it's not a big problem- though in an Aztek, it may result in difficulties shifting out of park because of damage to the shift-indicator slide.

Many owners report failing air conditioning parts at fairly low mileage, generally requiring replacement of the condenser to repair. While performing this job, your mechanic may discover one of the most aggravating and expensive GM engine problems of the last decade. Dubbed the Dex-Cool Salute, an expensive intake manifold gasket job may be required- as GM's specially formulated coolant is known to eat gaskets and aluminum parts for lunch.

Apparently, changing out factory Dex-Cool coolant is a good idea if the common leak hasn't made itself visible yet- though check with your mechanic first.

Statistically speaking, the Aztek should prove a reliable and trustworthy companion for family activities. Owners are be best advised to have their potential purchase inspected for the infamous intake-manifold leak and any wiring problems before agreeing to buy one. Your GM dealer knows best, and can also advise you on the performance of any recall related work- which deals mainly with a few fuel system valves and the front passenger airbag.

Check for common signs of abuse to the interior (carpeting, panels, seats) and exterior (paint near cargo-loading surfaces, vehicle underside and bumpers) to help get a sense of how well maintained your example was. If everything checks out, get ready to attract attention and make a statement wherever you go. Nobody ever gives a minivan a second look, after all.
