2001 AUDI ALLROAD

7-4-2001

by Éric Descarries , Guide Auto Francité

What really differentiates the allroad from other "crossovers" like they are called is its suspension system. Indeed, Audi has developed a system that rises above the rest. The air suspension controls the ground clearance in four levels and these can be selected by the driver or adjusted automatically by computer according to four different levels (it varies from 5.6 inches or 14.2 cm to 8.2 inches or 20.8 cm of road clearance according to on or off-road purpose). All this can be monitored with a toggle switch on the dashboard. Such specs match with the BMW X5 and the Land Rover Discovery. The advantage lies in the fact that the Audi allroad cans "sit" lower for the best road handling possible in highway situation. And all this can come automatically as the Audi can adjust its height to the car's speed. All there is to do is for the driver to choose the setting, manually or automatically.

To get the best traction possible, Audi has included standard traction control and stability system. As for the tires, Pirelli and Goodyear have developed special tires for the allroad, a 225/55HR 17 H that has specifications made for the road and off-road. They are mounted on beautifully designed 17-inch wheels. But it's the interior that might attract many buyers. It's a beautiful combination of leather, wood, design and lots of comfort and convenience. The dashboard is clean and instrumentation is easy to read. Five people can easily sit in the wagon type body and there is sufficient volume in the back to load some 73.2 cu. ft. of cargo. The floor is flat and loading is easy as long as the suspension is not sitting too high. Still, it would not be that difficult.
