2003 Mitsubishi Outlander Road Test

10-2-2002

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

What about loading up the Outlander? A convenience package adds roof rails, floor mats and keyless entry to the base LS, a must have if you've got children. An appearance package dresses the base vehicle up further with privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels for $600. Move up to the XLS and the price rises by just over $1,900 over base. Include the luxury package with heated front seats, leather seating surfaces and front side-impact airbags and pay just $1,576 more. Add the 'Sun & Sound' package that I mentioned earlier and it will cost you $1,380. Altogether, if you add every available factory option, the Outlander tops out at $31,653. How does it compare? A similarly equipped RAV4 Limited will cost $34,800 and the CR-V EX-L is slightly less at $33,150.

And that's a wrap. The Outlander is a terrific Japanese designed SUV especially well priced if you're looking for all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. Its generous supply of standard features raises it above many of its competitors while superb workmanship and high-quality materials help it to truly stand out in its compact SUV field. The Outlander is a welcome addition to the Canadian automotive market and absolutely worth checking out.
