2003 Nissan Altima Road Test

4-15-2003

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

How about braking? The standard 4-wheel disc system is quite good, but I prefer the optional 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor anti-lock system as featured on my test car. It also features Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), a technology that evens out braking pressure between all four wheels, and Brake Assist, that automatically adds brake pressure when needed. So equipped the Altima exhibits quick, controlled stops, no matter what weather conditions prevail - black ice and oil slicks notwithstanding.

At $23,798 it's an amazing bargain but even fully loaded its $33,723 price tag is still an extremely good deal considering the quality of car we're talking about. Yes, Nissan holds title to one of the highest J.D. Power quality ratings in comparison to competitive brands, while its V6 engine has been voted among Wards Auto's 10 best for nine years running.

No doubt Nissan would have continued to increase its midsize customer base at an aggressive pace even without the 2003 upgrades, but its Altima has improved to ensure its success nevertheless. Such an attitude is the mark of a long-term winner.
