2004 Acura MDX Road Test

2-1-2004

by Rob Rothwell , Canadian Auto Press

The splendid MDX drivetrain benefits greatly from being secured to a very rigid structure. The SUV was engineered to provide class-leading structural stiffness. Much of this was achieved by the use of two longitudinal rails that run the length of the vehicle, from bumper to bumper. These rails are buttressed by a total of 8 box-section cross-members at critical points along the vehicle's

platform. Acura also took extra care to ensure the MDX has uncompromising rigidity around the rear hatch. According to the Japanese automaker, static load tests of the MDX body structure showed that it is 30-percent stiffer than the old Lexus RX 300, in this particular area at least. I am not sure how that would compare to the 2004 Lexus RX330, but suffice to say, the MDX should be free of rattles and squeaks otherwise caused by body flex and shudder. The solidity of the vehicle's body and chassis provided the suspension engineers with a very solid platform on which to attach suspension components. Consequently the MDX is devoid of suspension noise, cowl shake and other undesirable effects imparted by potholes

and pavement depravities. It rides on a 4-wheel independent suspension, comprised of a three-link, trailing arm, coil spring setup in the rear, that does an admirable job of balancing the need to support heavy payloads with the desire to spoil the rear passengers with a smooth ride. The front suspension was engineered to optimize handling, stability, and ride comfort. The strut-type front coil spring and shock absorber assembly was also designed to tune out road noise, which it accomplishes very well. An anti-roll bar is incorporated into the package to reduce body roll during cornering. Acura claims the re-tuned 2004 suspension gives the MDX more car-like steering, handling and ride dynamics, which is quite an achievement given the outstanding performance of the 2003 model.
