2004 Hyundai Elantra GT Road Test

10-9-2003

by Alexandra Straub , Canadian Auto Press

There are three main reasons that Hyundai incorporated the CVVT system into their engine. First, fuel consumption is reduced. Second, it reduces NOx emissions because of its valve overlap optimization, and third, it enhances engine performance; an increase in maximum horsepower and torque.

So with all the upgrades to the Elantra, I wondered if the driving experience would be any different. The answer? It was. After spending some time both behind the wheel and in the passenger seat, I found that it was not only more aesthetically pleasing, but quicker.

The 5-door GT liftback, the racier of the two Elantra models, is a cozy ride with a sporty flare. The sport-tuned suspension adds to the experience. Whether slotting in and out of turns or driving along a straight-away, the GT performs quite well due to sufficient power and stable handling.

My test GT was equipped with the standard 5-speed manual transmission, which only made my time in it more fun. Changing gears is a smooth process enhanced by a standard leather-wrapped shift knob, while the clutch is fairly light making it easy to depress. I also appreciated the leather-wrapped steering wheel. It's comfortable and feels substantial in my hands.

When behind the wheel, I also had no visibility issues. Even with its hatchback configuration, the windows were well positioned making it easy to look out my blind spot.
