Other standard features include new adaptive front lighting (AFS), a system that bends the outside lights into the corner the wheels are turning towards for enhanced visibility. A new tire pressure monitoring system (TPM) also improves safety, but that's just getting started.

To help reduce injury in case of an accident the new LS adds knee airbags for front occupants, plus larger seat-mounted side-impact airbags. Lexus goes a step further by offering an optional Pre-Collision System (PCS). Essentially it instantly studies the car's primary functions, such as steering, braking input and its Dynamic Laser Cruise Control system, and if sensing a problem automatically brings seats into the safest positions possible, firms up shoulder belts and apply the brakes more firmly if necessary, among other things.

Not a safety feature but still pretty cool stuff, optional SmartAccess lets the driver unlock the car by merely touching the door handle (as long as the key fob is in a pocket or purse) and then starting it up by simply twisting the ignition switch, again without using the key. The power operated trunk can also be operated without touching the key fob. By the way, Lexus also boasts power latching doors on its top trim level.

As far as interior design goes, Lexus hasn't messed with success too much. Rather the previously mentioned superb quality of materials and top-tier fit and finish not only continue, but are now complimented by a gorgeous new antiqued walnut wood trim finish option, plus three new leather choices - Cashmere, Ash and Saddle.
