2004 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT Road Test

11-22-2003

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

A 5-speed manual transmission with Subaru's Hill Holder clutch comes standard with the option of a new 4-speed direct controlled electronic automatic transmission. The gearbox shifts quicker than the previous version, at least it seemed that way. There was, however, a noticeable improvement in shift quality, with the new transmission shifting smoother.

Braking too is up to the challenge brought on by the engine's quick acceleration. Even from high speed the 2.5 XT's ABS equipped 4-wheel discs respond to input immediately, delivering stable, controlled stops over and over. It's even controlled under extreme conditions, braking in wet, slippery conditions with confidence due to its 4-channel, 4-sensor anti-lock system (ABS). Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) is also part of the package.

While not as richly appointed as the best of its competitors, the Forester 2.5 XT is well put together with better than average materials. (Photo: Trevor Hofmann, Canadian Auto Press)
Inside it's accommodating to say the least. While not as richly appointed as the best of its competitors, the Forester 2.5 XT is well put together with better than average materials. I like the overall design, with large easily legible instruments and quality controls right at the fingertips. The seats are wonderfully comfortable, front and back, with ample room for legs, hips, shoulders and heads. Even the rear cargo area is sufficient for most daily duties, with 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks for longer items.

Another feature I happened to truly appreciate was the 6-disc in-dash audio system. Not only is the dash-mounted CD changer convenient, the system itself sounds great no matter the music genre.
