2007 Honda Civic LX Road Test

7-22-2007

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

Competition
The Civic LX sedan with the automatic transmission costs $21,830. As for competition, there are loads:

Dodge Caliber SXT with options, $20,015;
Chevrolet Cobalt LT 1SA with options, $20,195;
Ford Focus ZX4 SES with side-impact airbags, $20,369;
Hyundai Elantra GL Comfort Plus, $20,395;
Kia Spectra LX Premium, $20,345;
Mazda3 GS, $20,995;
Mitsubishi Lancer ES, $20,798;
Nissan Sentra 2.0 S, $20,698;
Pontiac G5 SE 1SA with options, $20,625;
Saturn ION2 with options, $20,510;
Suzuki Aerio Sedan, $20,195;
Toyota Corolla CE with SE package, $19,900;
Volkswagen City Jetta with options, $20,150.

Ok, the Civic isn't a bargain. Let's just say that among the other models listed above, some aren't as well-equipped (Spectra), or on the verge of being replaced (Corolla, Aerio). Behind the wheel of this Honda, we have the impression that we're getting our money's worth.

The A-pillar angle may interfere with your visibility.

Conclusion

There are three, maybe four compact sedans that stand out of the crowd. Which one is best? One thing's for sure, this Honda's part of that small group. In my humble opinion, the Civic's road manners and it's high level of refinement place it a hair on top of the others. I haven't yet driven the new Lancer, though...

Competent suspension
Quiet on the highway
Top-quality materials

Uncomfortable seat for middle rear occupant

High price compared to the strong competition
