2007 Honda Fit Sport Road Test

9-24-2007

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

Modest power, but frugal engine
With 109 horsepower, you'll intimidate no one at stoplights, of course. However, the car accelerates well and easily keeps its speed on the open road, even on highways where traffic rolls faster. If you think of trading in your Mustang GT for a Fit, you'll probably get a depression, but otherwise, the car performs adequately. 0 to 100 km/h accelerations with the automatic take about 11 seconds.

The engine delivers adequate performance and reasonable fuel consumption.

Speaking of the transmission, it's got 5 speeds, and the Sport version even benefits from wheel-mounted shift paddles. Let's say that with such a modestly-powerful car, this gadget isn't really useful, or particularly amusing. But I must admit they can come in handy if one likes to zigzag and squirt through urban traffic.

Where the engine and transmission really shine, and where they show that they're great business partners, is in regards to fuel consumption. My average of 7.6 L/100 km is excellent. Do we really need expensive hybrid cars with such fuel-miserly subcompacts?

The best-looking Fit
If the Fit DX and LX are lacking a little excitement in the looks department, the Sport is more interesting to stare at: it adds a lower-body skirt kit, a rear spoiler on the hatch, and nice 15-inch alloy wheels.

In addition, if you like this colour, called Blaze Orange Metallic, you'll have to choose the Sport model, since it's the only one that can be painted with it. Among other Sport model exclusivities, there are fog lamps, remote keyless entry and larger tires.

Competition
You probably already know who the Fit's adversaries are. However, here are a few prices of models that can be compared to the Sport version with an automatic:

Chevrolet Aveo5 LT with RS package, $17,540
Hyundai Accent SR, $20,745
Kia Rio5 EX Sport, $19,345
Nissan Versa 1.8 SL with Technology and Sport packages, $21,248
Pontiac Wave SE 5-door with Wi package, $17,540
Toyota Yaris RS 5-door with B package, $19,970
Suzuki Swift+ S, $17,095

With the same level of equipment, the Fit is the second most expensive of the category.
