The 2007 Jeep Compass is stepping in a crowded ring, and this Limited 4x4 test vehicle carries a base price of $24,355. It also included the CVT transmission ($1,300), the chrome wheels ($650), the 6-CD changer sound system with MP3 playback ($455), the Boston Acoustics upgrade package that installs swivel-down speakers in the rear hatch ($395), the UConnect communication system ($295) and the power sunroof ($850), for a grand total of $29,875.

The Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, the Ford Escape, the Honda CR-V, the Hyundai Tucson, the Kia Sportage, the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Nissan X-Trail and the Saturn VUE are all among this little Jeep's rivals. Rated or not won't have an influence on potential buyers. But if you're in a hurry, you'd better stick with the 5-speed manual.

What I like:
Smooth ride
Urban yet tough look
Interesting entry price

What I don't like:
Noisy engine
CVT is too slow
Some cheap interior flaws
