2007 Mazda RX-8 GT Road Test

11-7-2007

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

So, there are interesting choices that are less expensive, and some that are only a few thousand dollars away. The RX-8 has more room in back than all these listed models, however.

It looks like it is smiling at you, doesn't it?

Conclusion

We love the RX-8 for its handling and its good looks, but we don't care too much for its tight cockpit that offers poor outward visibility. And at $44,500, I'd rather spend a few dollars more a month and get myself a G37 which is more powerful and, in my opinion, better-looking.

The base RX-8 GS, at $37,195, is more reasonable and apart from the stability control system, it doesn't sacrifice anything really essential compared to the GT. The RX-8 represents the true definition of a sports car, because it's light and offers brilliant driving dynamics, and if the cockpit pleases you despite its shortcomings, you'll have a lot of fun behind the wheel.

Launched in 2004, the RX-8 distinguished itself in its category, but not anymore. And, there's always the matter of the rotary engine's long-term maintenance. If you're concerned with that, but are in love with the RX-8, I'd say lease it instead of buying it.

Great handling and unique rotary engine
Room for four adults
Good looks, even after 5 years

Blind spots in the cockpit
Expensive navigation system

Heavy fuel consumption
