2007 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Road Test

4-12-2007

by Matt St-Pierre , Auto123.com

A real GLI
The mk V Jetta GLI is the quickest best sorted out GLI ever. With that said, the 2007 GLI is still much larger and heavier than the original GLIs and GTXs. But, like the new GTI, Volkswagen has masterfully merged the essence of the first two generations with all of the necessary amenities that are expected nowadays.

Both the GTI and GLI share the blacked-out corporate grille.

The GLI has many competitors to contend with although none of them are able to combine luxury, handling, comfort, performance and versatility like Volkswagen's ultimate Jetta. My only concern is with the DSG itself. VW is not known for its stellar reliability record and because the DSG is complex and expensive, I would keep a close eye on how it is running.

The GLI's price starts at $31,995 and rises to nearly $38,000 with options.

Fabulous engine
DSG (as long as it works...)
Great seats
Low fuel consumption

Brakes
Short and long term reliability

Red lights last too long when you are driving a GLI...

Competitors:

Acura CSX Type-S
Subaru Impreza WRX
