2008 BMW 535i Road Test

9-23-2007

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

With tight maneuvering under control, Active Steering quickly proves its worth by providing extraordinarily precise, direct steering paired with perfect resistance and detailed feedback. After acclimating to Active Steering, conventional steering feels so "yesterday."

The 535i may be pricey, but it is one of the most satisfying vehicle to drive.

Halo effect?
I'm always weary of the "halo" effect when it comes to reviewing premium automobiles. Because it's expensive or hails from abroad doesn't mean it deserves journalistic gushing. When it comes to Bimmers, I'm particularly sensitive to this tendency yet the 535i deserves all you've read in this road test- and more. Those that demand spirited performance and appreciate sophisticated refinement will find the 2008 535i a tremendously satisfying vehicle to drive.

Potent turbocharged inline-six
Magical blend of ride and handling (Direct Drive, Active Steering)
Seats that hug you when no one else will (optional Comfort Seats)

Detectable suspension noise

Price; my full load tester listed-out at $80,750CA
