2008 Cadillac CTS4 SIDI Road Test

2-4-2008

by Justin Pritchard , Auto123.com

A six-speed automatic was installed with a reasonably quick and precise manual mode. Swapping of ratios is nearly imperceptible most of the time, though it sometimes hesitates when downshifting. A manual gearbox would solve this, but you can't have one if you want all wheel drive.

The AWD system does a commendable job of finding traction in slippery situations, and it transfers power around as smoothly and intelligently as systems from Audi or Acura. The result when accelerating hard over any sort of surface is consistent, strong power delivery with no squirming or lurching as power is sent about beneath the floor.

The CTS is loaded with gadgets such as a pop-up touch screen.

Other cold-busting features included automatic climate control, heated (and ventilated) seats, remote start and a heated washer fluid system. The latter function pre-heats the washer fluid in a few seconds when requested, melting ice from the windshield with ease.

Throw on a set of snow-tires, and CTS4 would slice through wintertime nastiness like a plasma torch through tin-foil. It does a real number on dry corners too, with a great handling and comfort equation by way of an optional sport-tuned suspension package that helps generate a solid and planted grip on the road.

Perhaps just as importantly, that grip is communicated back to the driver by a heavy but well connected steering system. Drivers can easily lock onto their line in hard cornering while getting a good feel for what's going on at the contact patches. Don't go thinking it 'rides like a Cadillac'- because the taut, Nurburgring-tuned chassis and 18" wheels with performance rubber makes it handle more like a BMW. It also considerably out-brakes comparable models from Mercedes and Volvo.

For all the tightness to the suspension, CTS felt overwhelmed on only the roughest roadways. In all, most will find the CTS's sporty reflexes and power co-exist nicely with all the quiet, peaceful luxury car stuff.

On the highway, a quiet, comfortable ride allows occupants to take in the excellent hard-drive equipped stereo with satellite radio beneath a panoramic sunroof. While enjoying a highway trip, the engine spins just over 2000 revs at 120 km/h, and mileage averages around 10.5L / 100km.

Owners can travel in confidence and comfort with peace-of-mind features like the endlessly helpful OnStar, stability control and an industry-leading 160,000 kilometre powertrain warranty to boot.

With OnStar alongside the navigation system, getting lost will become a thing of the past. OnStar can diagnose a check-engine light, summon emergency help as needed or even shut down the car if it's stolen. This sort of peace of mind and security has probably never looked so good.
