2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid Review

7-18-2008

by Justin Pritchard , Auto123.com

The hybrid stuff hasn't made the Tahoe any less of a workhorse. An electronic 4x4 system with low range is fitted, towing up to 6,200 lbs is no problem, and full-out V8 power and sound effects are always a throttle-jab away.

The tester boasted an inviting and calm interior with khaki-colored leather and wood trim.

It's a friendly giant, though. The tester boasted an inviting and calm interior with khaki-colored leather and wood trim applied towards a luxurious look. Materials and build quality are light-years ahead of the last-generation truck, though far from the best you'll find in a vehicle with a $73,000 price tag.

Front seats are partially powered and fully heated, and a navigation screen and rear-seat DVD system help complete the 'living room on wheels' atmosphere. There's storage and space everywhere, and adequate cargo capacity for almost any family job.

Moving along
Climb in, turn the key and listen to the faint hum from the V8 firing up momentarily, sans-starter. Set off, and depending on the charge state of the battery, the V8 may stay off until you hit the throttle too hard or exceed about 40 km/h. If you've got the stereo on, you'll likely never notice the constant switching and mixing between electric and gas driving. This could easily be the smoothest-transitioning hybrid system currently on the road.

The ride is premium-sedan quiet, and remarkably smooth and composed. It's a truly beautiful driving experience--with light steering directing the heavy, well planted and sturdy cruising manners. The only time Tahoe loses composure is when its body-on-frame construction exhibits a truck-like jiggle over rougher surfaces.

Despite being the size of a Canadian tire, it's not even difficult to park. Large mirrors and a backup camera help in this department, as does a tight turning radius.

The only telltale sign that a hybrid system is at work is the almost constant whine of the electric motors and transformers under the floor. Passengers unfamiliar with the vehicle will frequently check around for a nearby siren. The reaction of nearby pedestrians to a dead-silent Tahoe pulling away from a stop sign is equally amusing.
