2008 Hyundai Veracruz Limited Review

5-8-2008

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

The liquid power flows through a sophisticated six-speed autobox before being directed to two or four wheels depending on traction loss and anticipated slip. Hyundai has certainly met, and in my view, exceeded all expectations in terms of operational refinement with this engine and transmission combo.

Simply put: Paying the extra money for a Lexus or Acura nameplate won't buy a more refined or quieter drivetrain. It may however secure superior ride and handling dynamics.

As expected, the Veracruz is fitted with powerful antilock disc brakes at each corner.

Ride quality falls short
Unlocking the ideal suspension calibration is much like breaking the Enigma code with only a blunt pencil and a scrap of paper. Whether engineers should strive for smoothness over handling prowess or handling over ride quality is a hexing conundrum. In this case, I sense that handling eclipsed ride in the hierarchy of suspension needs.

The Veracruz doesn't handle routine road degradation with the degree of aplomb that I would prefer. That doesn't mean the engineers missed their target, it just meant that they didn't hit mine- albeit ride quality is by no means harsh. Perhaps more disappointing to me than ride quality was the "thumpiness" of the underpinnings.

Having just switched from time behind the wheel of Audi's super tight and composed A4 Avant, I found the suspension arrangement of the Veracruz lacked unity of purpose. That may sound esoteric, and no doubt it is, but if I have a criticism of the Veracruz, it has to do with the civility of its suspension.

Over the miles and varying road surfaces I traveled, I couldn't help but think that further suspension refinement is needed if the Veracruz is to truly meet or beat the premium marques at their game.

Standard equipment includes plenty of safety and occupant protection
In addition to a cabin rife with the amenities of comfort and luxury, the Veracruz is quite wisely equipped with plenty of safety technology and occupant protection, all supplied as standard equipment. The list includes Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control programs along with a full menu of airbags, of which roof-mounted side-curtain protection applies to all three rows of seating.
