2008 Jeep Liberty Limited Review

6-24-2008

by Bertrand Godin , Auto123.com

Raw powertrain
Motivating my Limited tester was a 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V6. This mill proves to be a decent performer, offering a good amount of low-end torque for off-road escapades. Still, a bit more power would have been appreciated.

The 4-speed automatic transmission is pretty basic and its operation is really disappointing -- not a good fit for the Liberty. What's more, fuel economy is arguably unimpressive; I averaged 13 liters per 100 kilometers.

On and off the road
The center of gravity of the Jeep Liberty is very high so, in off-road conditions, it comes in handy but, in normal driving conditions, it becomes a real handicap. Instability in corners is further increased by the significant weight of the vehicle. Moreover, the tall body sides enhance the impact of crosswinds, which affects control.

The suspension is pretty firm on the highway but remarkably competent off the beaten path. Like any self-respecting Jeep, the 2008 Liberty boasts numerous driving aids, like Hill Descent Control (HDC), which is very effective at containing the vehicle on sloping ground, and the highly-acclaimed Command-Trac II four-wheel drive system.

A bushwhacking machine
The 2008 Jeep Liberty is not a segment leader in terms of comfort and refinement. However, it offers what no other rival can -- legendary off-road performance.

The biggest quality of this Jeep is also its biggest drawback: the Liberty is made for the toughest terrains, not the pavement. Not everyone will be able to enjoy it on a daily basis; you have to be a regular off-road driver to get the most out of it.

So, if you feel more at ease on paved roads and race tracks, forget about the Liberty. I didn't get the opportunity to perform any kind of off-road test, but based on everyday use, this SUV gets a low score. That said, if you're a true Jeep fan, I can easily see why you'll like the Liberty.
