2008 Lexus IS 250 AWD Review

4-28-2008

Not for big guys and girls
It's all very nice to look at and feel, though space is at a premium. Taller than 5"10'? You'll have to recline the seat heavily to free up some headroom. As such, little room is available for anyone of similar size sitting behind you. The AWD system has also necessitated a lump in the driver's side footwell which can get in the way while exiting the vehicle. A car for five big adults it is not- but it's got a cozy coupe-like feel for four of average size.

Steering is sharp, quick and heavy- very much like the BMW 3-Series.

Movin and shakin

This is backed up by a razor-sharp level of performance that's up to par with the best in the market. Steering is sharp, quick and heavy- very much like the BMW 3-Series which often exemplifies perfect steering feel. The brakes are much the same: quick, sharp, powerful and fade-free. Combined with a magnificent pedal feel, this is how brakes in a performance sedan should feel.

The 2.5 liter engine manages to impress duly as well. It's not a tire-melting monster by any regard, but it is peppy enough to satisfy most drivers while delivering decent fuel mileage. Highway cruising at 125 kph saw mileage average 10L of premium per 100km, that figure rising to just over 12.5 in the city.

The mill loves to wind up and emits a pleasant sounding roar all the way to its gentle rev-limiter and accompanying red warning-ring in the tachometer. Interestingly, throttle sharpness can be adjusted by a switch to "Normal", "Snow" and "Power" settings- depending on the prevailing weather and road conditions. The all wheel drive and stability control system make quick work on snow or ice that stand between you and your destination.

Automatic only for AWD models..a pity!
The mill can't be had with a manual transmission and AWD in the same car- to the displeasure of cold-blooded driving enthusiasts everywhere. The automatic shifts tightly and without trying to filter every bit of its presence from the cockpit. It's generally quick and precise, though slow to react to driver-instructed gear-changes in manual-mode. Here's one area where the German machines have the unquestionable advantage.

IS it for you?
At the end of the day, the Lexus IS250 AWD puts on a terrific performance- so long as you aren't of above average proportions. If that's the case, you'll find it an easy choice where extremes of style, capability and equipment are a priority.

It's all very nice to look at and feel, though space is at a premium.
