2008 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS 4WD Review

6-25-2008

Familiar engineering
The driving position is a little upright and more truck-like than car-like. That's kind of odd considering that the Mitsubishi Outlander uses the same platform as the Lancer compact sedan. On the plus side, though, the car roots of this SUV enhance its driving dynamics and handling. The suspension is firm and body roll is limited in sharp turns.

The driver-selectable 4WD system proves effective and allows light-duty off-road adventures. Road and wind noise is nothing to worry about, as soundproofing is very good.

A bit of punch under the hood
With a 220-hp V6 engine, the 2008 Outlander is capable of delivering efficient, pleasant performances. Accelerations are surprising; although they won't pin you to your seat, they are quite spirited for the size of the vehicle. The powertrain is well calibrated, as is the 6-speed Sportronic transmission, which I found both convincing and quick-shifting. However, the paddle shifters on the steering wheel are oddly positioned, making them awkward to manipulate.

Braking performance is reasonable though not exemplary. And while the steering lacks feedback, it does a good all-around job, with no major irritant.

A more competitive Outlander
Now in its second generation, the Mitsubishi Outlander finds itself in a better position to take on competitors. Styling is commendable and the vehicle is unique in many respects. The driving experience is pleasant just like handling, even though the steering feels somewhat artificial.

There might be a few other flaws like the ridiculously tight third-row seats and the awkward paddle shifters, but as a whole, this Japanese SUV quickly wins people over -- and likely makes them loyal customers. Mitsubishi successfully created a vehicle that meets the needs and wants of the growing compact SUV customer pool.
