2008 Toyota Highlander First Impressions

7-20-2007

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

The third-row bench is similar to the competition in that only kids or extra luggage will fit back there. Fortunately, a new lever-and-handle system allows you to fold the entire bench with one hand and benefit from additional cargo room.

This engine has made its mark in many other Toyotas.

Various models, one engine

While the Highlander lineup is comprised of four trim levels, including Base, SR5, Sport and Limited, only one engine is available. The proven 3.5L V6 now generates 50 more horsepower for a total output of 270. This efficient mill is a true warrior for Toyota, powering not only the Highlander but also the Sienna, Camry, Avalon and even the Lexus RX 350.

During accelerations, the reworked powertrain proved to be particularly potent and quiet. Mated to an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission, its powerband is extremely easy to manage. The transmission in itself is precise and downshifts at the right time to climb up hills and perform strong passing maneuvers. In addition, it allows for a smoother ride and a significantly improved fuel economy -- so says the automaker.

Equipment galore
Since the Highlander is a family-oriented vehicle, the folks at Toyota definitely banked on the comprehensive list of features to appeal to buyers. And before going any further, I should remind you that this crossover is more geared for the city than the outback.

All Highlander models come standard with seven airbags, ABS brakes with EBD as well as traction and stability control. As you can see, Toyota puts a priority on safety. Also, every model is exclusively available with all-wheel drive, which means that the Highlander is a go-anywhere type of crossover.

Even better, in SR5 trim, there's a standard rearview camera linked to a tiny 3.5-inch display in the middle of the dashboard. When left unused, the screen provides information on fuel economy and outside temperature.

The interior has also been revised and updated.
