2008 Volvo S40 and V50 First Impressions

7-9-2007

Upholstery: choose T-Tec
Because Canada does not get the base model S40s and V50s, we won't necessarily be able to enjoy the Spring Green cloth seat upholstery (the same green as freshly cut grass). Those who fall in love with this "ridiculous thing" (like me!) will have the opportunity to get it by placing a special order.

Otherwise, here's my advice: choose the T-Tec upholstery. This high-quality material is pleasant to the touch while costing less and breathing more easily than leather.

The V50's lines are unmistakably Volvo.

Mature driving

Beyond their visual and functional modifications, the 2008 S40 and V50 that are set to arrive in dealerships this summer can brag about offering 9 additional horsepower, at least with the T5 models (227 compared to 218). This is not a significant output increase and many would have liked more but, on the Autobahns, these compacts really know how to deliver convincing accelerations.

In fact, after trying out the new C30 a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised by the maturity of the S40 and V50. Although the three share the same engine and transmission, the two larger ones offer a more intelligent drive, mainly because of the steering's more substantial feel.

Of course, when the road gets rough, the shocks are a bit too noisy to my liking. Nevertheless, the suspension is nicely firm and rather sporty in most conditions. Due to the cars' compact size, visibility has been addressed with great care and proves to be excellent at all corners. Occupants instinctively feel as though they're an integral part of the car.

Enhanced safety and new options
For 2008, the updated S40 and V50 are priced exactly as in 2007, despite the fact that stability control is now standard on all models. (Right now, it's optional on T5 and T5 AWD models and not even on the menu with the 2.4i.)

There are also new options available, like the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), which alerts the driver if another vehicle enters either one of the blind spots, and the active bi-xenon headlights that swivel in corners to optimize nighttime visibility. Oh, and the heated front seats can be ordered separately, which means you no longer have to pay for an entire option package.

Pricing remains unchanged for 2008.
