2009 Chrysler Town & Country Limited Review

1-9-2009

by Justin Pritchard , Auto123.com

The six-speed automatic transmission yielded the only complaint of the drivetrain. Reaching for the dashboard-mounted shifter is a bit awkward, and the unit can occasionally exhibit clumsiness when selecting a gear. Note that for 2009, engineers have made optimizations to the engine and gearbox for increased fuel efficiency.

Even on rougher roads, Town & Country gently floats along in serene quietness.

Ride quality and handling are excellent. Even on rougher roads, Town & Country gently floats along in serene quietness, leaving passengers to sit back and enjoy the ride. The turning circle is appreciably tight given the size and length at play, and side mirrors tilt to help line things up for parallel parking. A rearview camera helps reduce surprise crunches, too.

Steering and handling are appreciably car-like, and the Town & Country delivers a surprising level of grip and composure when pushed in emergency maneuvers. It feels notably stable and solid--not tippy or top-heavy as its looks may imply.

Loaded with options, it arguably amounts to the ultimate minivan available today. Some budget plastics and a few clumsy gearshifts aside, it packs top levels of style and equipment into a price tag on par with many an entry-level family SUV. If you don't need four-wheel drive and truckish ground clearance, be sure to consider getting more for your SUV dollar here.
