2009 Honda Accord EX-L Review

10-13-2009

by Luc Gagné , Auto123.com

Obtrusive trunk
Among 4-cylinder Accords, the EX-L is the only one that can receive GPS navigation ($800). However, unlike some competitors, this option does not include a back-up camera which makes parking manoeuvres easier. Yet, such device would be pretty helpful here as the tall trunk considerably affects rearward visibility.

Granted, said trunk is very accommodating and offers Mitsubishi Galant-like cargo room. If you want more, simply fold the rear seatbacks. Too bad the edge of the trunk is a little high, though. And if you’re looking for the midsize sedan with the largest trunk capacity, both the Fusion and Mazda6 are 20-percent more generous than the Accord.

Granted, said trunk is very accommodating and offers Mitsubishi Galant-like cargo room.

Driving the 2009 Accord EX-L on the road turned out to be an uneventful experience. I mean, there were no surprises there. The power steering is precise and, unlike the Camry’s, it’s not overly assisted. The brakes are fade-free and easy to modulate, while the slush box effectively masks gear shifts. As for the suspension, it’s as firm as one could wish for, especially by American (mostly Buick) standards.

Fairly comprehensive equipment
The EX-L model is comprehensively equipped, although it should be said you don’t gain much by moving upscale from the EX. Additions include leather trim for the seats and steering wheel, heated front buckets, dual-zone climate control and a sound system that will delight music lovers.

The 190-horsepower engine and 17-inch alloy wheels are also found on the lower-end EX (the base LX makes do with 16-inch wheels).

Bottom line: unless leather seats are a top priority, the 2009 Honda Accord EX is the more sensible choice -- that is if the 177 ponies of the LX are not enough for you!
