2009 Mazda RX-8 Preview

6-9-2008

by Justin Pritchard , Auto123.com

The rotary engine is characterized by its unique sound, smooth power curve free-revving character. With the six-speed manual gearbox, the RX-8 redlines at a shrieking 9000 rpm, while dashing to 100 km/h in about six seconds. Of course, powerful four-wheel disc brakes are fitted for gut-wrenching stopping power to back up the acceleration. Antilock and brake force distribution are standard.

The 2009 RX-8 lineup starts at $37,295 for the GS, and tops out at $42,395 for the GT. Navigation can be added for $2,600 as well.

The RX-8's combination of balance, furiously high-revving rotary power and track-ready suspension tuning make it an absolute blast to drive hard, though comfortable and laid back to drive gently as well. It competes with the likes of Nissan's 350Z, Mitsubishi's Eclipse, Ford's Mustang and the Honda S2000.
