2009 Volvo XC70 T6 AWD Review

9-12-2008

by Bertrand Godin , Auto123.com

The automaker must be applauded for making the interior so simple. Locating the various controls and instruments at a glance is easy, which allows you to use them safely while driving. Versatility is another operative word inside, especially the rear cargo area which continues to offer a flat loading surface once the seatbacks are folded.

As for the seats, they're very comfortable. Sure, side support for the thighs could have been better but, considering the driving habits of most XC70 owners, I won't complain about it. Furthermore, the solid chassis translates into a quiet interior; exterior noises are effectively filtered, even in off-road conditions.

The revolution
The biggest news for 2009 is probably the addition of the T6 model, which adds a turbocharger to bump horsepower figures by 46 to 281. It's all backed by 295 pounds-feet of torque. While you shouldn't expect exhilarating performance, the improvement is quite significant. The engine remains flexible and very user-friendly. Accelerations are not what this machine is about, but it manages to deliver decent thrills.

The biggest news for 2009 is the addition of the T6 model, which adds 46 horsepower.

The 6-speed Geartronic transmission is pleasantly subtle. It makes for a smooth driving experience thanks to nicely calibrated gear ratios. Upshifts and downshifts are quite progressive. Meanwhile, the steering proves highly dynamic and ideally assisted, with the sort of slight resistance I am so fond of. It's also very precise and responsive, providing clear information for the driver. What's more, braking performance is good; the brake pedal feels light, which might not be the best thing for spirited driving, but it's a nice fit in day-to-day use.

The Volvo XC70 has matured considerably over the years. Despite its substantial size and relatively high center of gravity, the car proves to be a surprising performer in corners. I found it delightfully predictable and reassuring, which boosted my confidence behind the wheel -- regardless of road conditions. The suspension knows its role and does a great job of delivering a smooth ride, be it on highways or gravel roads.

In a class of its own?
The XC70 has been standing alone since the demise of the Audi Allroad. However, other premium AWD vehicles are threatening Volvo's off-road wagon, including a BMW trio: the 328xi Touring ($45,100), 535xi Touring ($73,600) and X3 3.0i ($51,100). Mercedes-Benz also has three worthy contenders: the R350 ($63,500), E350 4MATIC ($77,300) and the all-new GLK350 4MATIC (about $55,000). Finally, Audi strikes back with the A6 Avant quattro ($62,800) and A4 Avant 3.2 quattro ($50,950). Note: Volvo will offer the XC60 compact crossover starting next year.

The bottom line
The 2009 Volvo XC70 T6 is just as tastefully executed as its predecessors and, overall, quality is beyond reproach. It's a conventional wagon -- or should I say conservative? -- which will no doubt appeal to the brand's long-time fans. There has been a significant improvement in performance, yet no compromises were made. As a great combination of unique and advanced features stuffed in a traditionally-styled package, the XC70 is hard not to like.
