6^th place : Nissan Pathfinder

Despite a long list of features and a commanding presence, the Pathfinder did little to impress our jury. It has to be said that the comprehensive equipment adds weight while reducing handling and increasing the price significantly. At over $58,000, our Pathfinder was actually the most expensive of the bunch.


On the road, this midsize SUV from Nissan did a pretty good job. Accelerations are surprising and comfort is impeccable. However, this vehicle is hard to steer with accuracy; road feedback is non-existent and the on-center feel is quite vague. What's more, our judges were slightly disappointed with the fit and finish.

In the off-road section, the Pathfinder did not manage to stand out. In steep descents, there is no engine braking system to help the driver, which resulted in our tester going downhill faster than expected. Moreover, the suspension is soft and the ground clearance is limited, especially because of the side steps. When the Pathfinder did overcome an obstacle, it rarely had an easy time doing so.


Nevertheless, the Nissan got points for its generous cargo room that's easy to access and for its rearview camera that makes delicate maneuvers easier, whether on the road or on the trail.

We have no other choice but to put it in last place. A much lower base price would likely have improved the Pathfinder's result.
