Jose Maria Lopez: I don't feel right

7-31-2006

We talk to Jose Maria Lopez after he came so close to winning today's GP2 series race
source: gp2series.com

GP2 Series: Jose, not the result you were looking for today, but a great result nonetheless.
Jose Maria Lopez:
Yeah. I am a little bit hard with myself I think. I don't feel right. I should be feeling OK, because I started the first race from the last row, with 25 guys in front of me, and I think nobody would have bet on me to be fighting for the win today. The team did a great job, and today I was hoping to win the race. I wanted to win the race. It's never easy with these guys here. You have so many quick drivers and I think especially Timo was very motivated here, and he really wanted to race. Of course I wanted to as well, but it's just the way it goes.

In the last ten laps I had some trouble to turn right. The car was understeering and getting worse, and he came, he came and he came and I couldn't hold him. When he made the move I braked inside. Unfortunately it was a right-hand corner as well so I really struggled to turn, so I couldn't really hit the apex. He just made it through on the inside, got on the throttle and it looked like he had better traction, because I went on the throttle and I didn't want to let him pass, so I went really aggressive and I almost spun and he made it. It was a tough break really.

I feel a bit ashamed after that. But it's racing, it's just one point. We need to keep scoring strong points until the end to finish at least in the top five of the championship. But everybody remembers your last race.

GP2 Series: You had a very similar pace to Timo all race and it looked like you could hold him pretty easily. But in the last ten laps the lead came down by about point two each lap.
Jose:
Yeah
