Maserati's GranTurismo S will bow at Geneva

A year after showing the world their GranTurismo at last year's Geneva Motor Show, Italian carbuilder Maserati will showcase a performance enhanced version at the same stand. With a greater emphasis on driving enjoyment and performance, their latest model promises to become the ultimate expression of the brands sportiness.

Dubbed the GranTurismo S, Maserati has named their velocity-enhanced coupe using the oldest trick in the performance car name game- though new technology and features promise to give it a new level of excitement. For instance, a 440 horsepower V8 displaces 4.7 litres and breathes out through a tuned exhaust system which can be made loud or quiet at the press of a button.

Powerful Brembo brakes are fitted to match the output, and the model can hit 100 kph in under 5 seconds, en route to a nearly 300 kph top speed. An upgraded six-speed gearbox is installed to generate gearshifts that take place in just milliseconds. An even faster "quick shift" function is possible above 5500 rpm and with the throttle at 80%. The entire gearbox assembly is located in the rear of the car to help with balance and handling.

Of course, owners of the new GranTurismo S will be treated to some stand-apart visual treatments on the outside of the car, as well as enhanced luxury inside. Check it out at the Geneva motor show, which opened this week.
