NASCAR: Bowyer wins at Richmond, a night to forget for Hamlin, Earnhardt and Carpentier

5-4-2008

by Éric Descarries

Clint Bowyer (Chevy No 07) won his second ever NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the .750-mile Richmond oval track Saturday evening after taking the lead with two laps to go following a yellow flag situation.

What triggered that yellow flag was a contact between then leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Chevy No 88) and runner up Kyle Busch (Camry No 18). Earnhardt lost it and hit the wall. He would finish 15th while Busch held on to second place.

Veteran Mark Martin (Chevy No 8) finished third. Local driver Denny Hamlin (Camry No 11) led 381 of the 400 laps but a slow leaking tire sidelined him and he would end up 25th.

As for Canadian Patrick Carpentier (Dodge No 10), after a great 4th qualifying place, he fell back to the end of the pack and was involved in the first major crash of the race on lap 281 in which some 10 cars were damaged. He unfortunately ended up 43rd and dead last.
