NASCAR: Joey Logano gets 'coolest Nationwide win' in Daytona

7-2-2011

by Lewis Franck

While Joey Logano was finding the Nationwide Series Victory Lane at Daytona Danica Patrick was learning the art of the tandem draft.

Logano, who took the lead with a last lap push from teammate Kyle Busch in the 100-lap race, seemed a little surprised at the win.

"Usually I'm the guy that finishes second but I am the winner (here) and I'm pretty pumped up about that," he said.

"To win here at Daytona is the coolest win of my life. For me personally, I really needed a win and this is going to help us," Logano added.

Patrick, who is rumored to move over to a full-time NASCAR career from IndyCar, took the lead early by being pushed by two-time Cup champion Tony Stewart.

When Stewart broke off to find Elliott Sadler (both drove for Kevin Harvick on Friday night), the diminutive woman found her JR Motorsport teammate Eric Almirola.

With Patrick in the front the two-car tandem was one of the fastest and she led as late as lap 96 bringing out the cheers of the crowd until the last lap. But the Stewart/Sadler tandem took the lead and led as late as lap 99.

On the final lap Patrick, being pushed by Almirola, swerved to avoid Mike Wallace and was then in contact with his nephew Steven Wallace (Rusty's son) and a fiery multi-car wreck ensued.

"Mike Wallace was struggling," Patrick said, "All of a sudden he came up and there was no where to go, which might not be the best thing here, but I was going for broke. I learned a lot, that's for sure."

Jason Leffler finished second and Reed Sorenson finished third.
