Saab 9-X BioHybrid: responsible performance! The North American premiere of the Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept at the New York Auto Show aims to demonstrate how performance and eco-friendliness can go hand in hand. Previewing the upcoming Saab 9-4X compact crossover, this innovative concept uses GM's next-generation hybrid technology. The 1.4L BioPower turbocharged engine is mated to an electric starter/alternator fed by a high-output lithium-ion battery from Hitachi, the latter being mounted underneath the floor. A 6-speed manual transmission with automated clutch, sequential gear selection and steering wheel controls sends power to the driving wheels. The hybrid powertain generates up to 200 horsepower while emitting only 105 grams of CO2 per kilometer when using E85 fuel (or 117 grams with regular gasoline). Likewise, fuel consumption will vary based on the type of fuel being used: 4.9 L/100 km with gasoline and, ironically, 6.4 L/100 km with E85. The Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept also shows how green efficiency can be exciting as far as performance is concerned. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 8.3 seconds when running on gasoline, while E85 allows you to shave 0.4 second off of that time. That's what Saab likes to call "responsible performance".
