cabin of the ES is quite remarkable and most relaxing. Few cars in the entry-level luxury segment are capable of matching this level of refinement. Adding to the bliss of an ES330 road trip is the availability of a dazzling, 240-watt Mark Levinson sound system.

Inserting the key into the dash-mounted ignition and firing up the ES is a very serene event, which brightly illuminates a dark set of translucent gauges. A quick look at the tachometer is needed to confirm the silent running 3.3-litre DOHC 24-valve V6 has ignited with the power of 225 spirited horses and 240 creamy smooth pound-feet of torque.

These power ratings are capable of launching the front-wheel drive ES with authority. Fortunately, a traction control system

reins in the front rubber when an over-enthusiastic right foot meets the gas pedal. However, I noticed a momentary delay precedes the delivery of power when the throttle is depressed. This seems to be intrinsic to many modern electronic throttle control systems and not unique to Lexus.

Once under way, confident passing power is quickly on tap through a five-speed automatic transmission that shifts with imperceptible delicacy. Rather than following the trend toward an automatic stick with a manual mode, Lexus has equipped the ES330 with a beautifully finished gated shift plate. I have always preferred gated shift plates to manual-mode setups, and the ES reinforces this.
