Minor fuel economy quibbles aside, the XC90 is a very desirable mid-size SUV. In fact it's one of my favorites, and believe me there're plenty to choose from. Volvo's SUV sets itself apart in styling, ergonomics and occupant comfort, not to mention practicality and versatility. It performs all maneuvers with a great deal of assurance but its not geared toward high-performance motoring the way BMW's X5 and Infiniti's FX35/45 are. Rather the XC90 is more aligned with relaxed, open-road touring that regardless of weather and road conditions leaves one feeling fresh and restored after long stints behind the wheel. It also performs plebian city and commuting duties equally well, making this SUV one smooth, sticky Swede. | 2007 Volvo XC90 3.2 (Photo: Rob Rothwell, Auto123.com) | Impressive:Sharp styling Beautiful cabin Velcro-like traction Comfortable ride Less-impressive:Heavy-duty pricing Could use more zip Compromised third row headroom Fuel thirsty
