2008 BMW 135i Review

24 août 2008

par Bertrand Godin , Auto123.com

The 6-speed transmission powers the rear wheels and is well spaced and precise, though it could shift a little earlier, but that's just the opinion of a race car driver! The suspension is stiff, which can be slightly uncomfortable, but reacts very well in corners. It's actually one of the major players in this car's extraordinary handling. The handling is superb, and it's surprising how fast the car can enter curves. Always very stable, it is truly designed to be enjoyed on a track. Confidence behind the wheel is guaranteed.

The steering is communicative without being overly assisted, allowing us to understand the vehicle's reactions and ensuring an exciting ride. The computer-assisted driving systems do a good job. Deactivating the stability control system allows us to drive with our fingertips and encourages us to be attuned to the slightest reactions of the vehicle. The car is very well equipped in terms of the braking system, which is efficient and conveys a sporty feel. And needless to say, the 135i's handling is almost without equal. Compact, powerful, precise, this is city driving at its finest.

The handling is superb, and it's surprising how fast the car can enter curves.

Competition
Although unique in its coupe incarnation, the 1 Series must nonetheless face its other luxury brand rivals. All hatchbacks, all European. There's the urban go-kart, the Mini Cooper S ($29,900), the Audi A3 3.2 S-Line Quattro ($45,700), which only comes in a 5-door version, the Volvo C30 T5 ($31,995) and finally the Volkswagen GTI ($27,975), which lacks the prestige of its competitors but makes up for it in performance.

Conclusion
This car is the embodiment of driving pleasure. It's still a toy, albeit a useful and practical one. Its price tag isn't for everyone, but at least it's one of the more affordable BMWs. With the 135i, BMW has pulled out all the stops, with resounding success.
